# Worksheet generator versions

## Version 1.2 update — sidebar order (22 October 2026)

**Title** is a separate first panel in the worksheet settings sidebar, followed
by **Saved papers**. Year group, Topic, Filters, Difficulty, Length & time and
Page layout follow them. The controls and saved-paper behaviour are unchanged
in all three worksheet editions.

## Version 1.2 update — questions per page and new interface (22 October 2026)

- **1, 2 or 3 questions per page** now produce true A4 pages. Each page holds exactly that many questions, the questions share the whole page height, and every answer line sits at the bottom of its question's space. Multi-part questions share the space by marks. If a page cannot fit its questions (for example under the paper header), the extra question moves to the next page; a question that is still too long is outlined in the preview. **Auto** spacing also keeps answer lines at the bottom of each question.
- **KS4 schemes for Years 9–11**: choosing Y9, Y10 or Y11 shows a **Scheme of work** dropdown with **KS4**, **KS4 Exam** or **All worksheet topics**. With a KS4 scheme, the topic list follows that scheme's teaching order (for example *W5: Ratio*), and each topic draws questions from the matching bank topics and subtopics. KS4 Exam's *Combinations* has no bank questions yet. Years 7–8 keep the full list. The mapping is built by `app/tools/build_scheme_topics.cjs` into `app/scheme-topics.js`.
- **New interface** for all three worksheet-generator editions: a light header with grouped tools and export buttons, numbered setting cards, switch toggles and segmented year/tab controls. Every control keeps its behaviour. The theme is in `app/theme.css`; worksheet and print styles stay in `app/styles.css`.

## Version 1.2 update — starter options (22 October 2026)

- **Lesson date**: the starter date can now be changed, for example to prepare a starter for next week. A chosen date stays through regeneration and swaps and when the page is reopened; **Today** returns to automatic dating, and a cleared date prints a blank line.
- **Methods booklet pages**: each question card shows the KS4 Methods Booklet page for its method (for example **Booklet p. 18–21** for ratio). They also appear in the Word download. They can be hidden.
- **Hide the L.O.**: untick **Show L.O. on the starter** to omit the objective from the slide, PDFs and Word files.
- **More varied ratio, probability and proportion questions**: ratios, contexts and question shapes now change on every draw instead of repeating fixed examples such as sharing in 2:3:4. New task types include combining ratios, ratio and fractions, missing probabilities, relative frequency and exchange rates.

Checks: `app/tools/starter_variations_checks.cjs` (new) and the updated `starter_controls_checks.cjs`; all existing starter checks pass.

## Version 1.2 — 22 October 2026

The full worksheet and starter generators are packaged as `1.2.zip`, including
all local application assets, fonts, reference materials, documentation, review
samples and the preserved version 1.0 archive. Open `index.html` or `starter.html`
after extracting the complete folder.

starter previews and both starter PDF exports. The starter PDF author metadata
also names Yunfei Wang. Third-party and reference-material notices are retained.

### Shared topics across year groups

Every worksheet year group (Years 7–11) now offers the same 169 topics and the full question bank. The selected year labels the paper but no longer filters topics or questions, so Year 7 can use any GCSE method. Changing year keeps the selected topics and custom marks, and opening a Browse Bank question keeps the current year. The per-question year tags remain in the bank unchanged. The rule is in `app/year-topics.js` and checked by `app/tools/year_topic_ui_checks.cjs`.

The starter generator's **Year group** control chooses the scheme of work: Year 7 uses Year 7; Year 8 uses Year 8 or Year 8 Plus; Years 9–11 use KS4 or KS4 Exam. Both starter Word downloads now work.

## Version 1.1 — Starter generator

Open `starter.html`, or choose **Starter Generator** from any worksheet-generator edition.
Choose a scheme of work, search for the lesson topic, choose **Starter 1**, **2** or **3**, and select the class difficulty. The three levels are Bottom set · Foundation, Middle set (the existing level) and Top set. Each question has its own topic selector and swap button; swapping preserves the other three questions.
The preview and direct PDF downloads have four questions on one landscape 16:9 page.
The questions-only and questions-with-answers versions share the same question set.
Screenshot view removes the controls; press Escape to return.
New starters automatically show the day they are generated. Automatic questions follow the teaching before the selected topic's first occurrence in the scheme: questions 1–2 revisit the recent topic, rotating through six task types across Starters 1–3; question 3 connects earlier learning, and question 4 is the strongest extension. Individual topic choices can replace the automatic selection. The four-card layout embeds the maths fonts and separates the teacher answers clearly.

The original question bank is retained. The version 1.0 archive below is unchanged.
See `STARTER-GENERATOR.md` for the retrieval rules, source-calendar notes and local checks.

## Version 1.1 — Specific worksheet topics

All three worksheet-generator editions now offer 124 specific subtopics within 34 broad units. For example, **Simplifying**, **Expanding brackets** and **Factorising** are separate selections, with 69, 191 and 266 question variants respectively. Other splits include prime factors / HCF / LCM, direct / inverse proportion, individual graph and chart types, Pythagoras / trigonometry rules, transformations, and rearranging / functions / iteration / proof.

The original broad units remain as **Mixed skills** options. Questions that genuinely combine different subtopics remain in those mixed units. A perimeter-only option is not offered because the stored perimeter questions also require area. The all-SoW booklet retains its original 43 units so it does not duplicate parent and child worksheets.

Specific-topic selection works with question counts, exact totals, custom topic marks, swaps, matched Paper B variants and saved papers. Choosing a mixed unit replaces its selected subtopics, and choosing a specific subtopic replaces its selected mixed unit. Question IDs, parts, marks, solutions and both source bank files are unchanged; version 1.0 saved papers continue to open by their original IDs.

The audited family mapping is in `app/topic-catalog.js`. Checks are in `app/tools/subtopic_checks.cjs` and `app/tools/subtopic_ui_checks.cjs`.

## Version 1.1 — Choose a topic for a worksheet swap

Each worksheet question has a topic chooser beside **Swap**. Leave **Keep current topic** selected for the existing swap behaviour, or choose a particular topic or subtopic and click **Swap**. Changing the chooser alone does not replace a question, and pending choices for other questions survive swaps and paper-view changes.

The chosen question can use a topic outside the worksheet's original selection while retaining the active year, tier, calculator, minimum-mark and diagram filters. Exact-mark and GCSE papers preserve the replaced question's marks; if no eligible question exists, the paper stays unchanged and shows an explanation. A topic change in matched Paper A or B updates the corresponding position in both papers to retain the family, marks and part structure. Other positions stay unchanged.

Titles and mark breakdowns show the actual topics after manual changes. Manual topic assignments are included in saved papers, session storage and JSON exports; **New Worksheet** clears them and generates from the original controls. Printable HTML and printed worksheets omit the interactive topic choosers and swap buttons. Checks are in `app/tools/worksheet_swap_topic_checks.cjs`.

## Version 1.1 — Methods review and basic HCF/LCM (22 October 2026)

Every candidate in the quadratic factor-pair table now carries its correct signs. In particular, a positive product and negative middle coefficient display two negative factors throughout the list, including the screenshot example −1 and −252, −2 and −126, and −7 and −36.

Two selectable topics, **HCF of two numbers (basic)** and **LCM of two numbers (basic)**, provide 480 direct numerical questions across 120 small number pairs, including 25 and 40. Their worked solutions use factor trees and a prime-factor Venn diagram as on booklet page 42. They support exact marks, individual topic swaps, saved papers and matched Paper B. The original 23,000-question source bank and version 1.0 archive are preserved; the live worksheet bank adds these questions at load time.

The follow-up review corrects abbreviated or different methods in both editions: point-gradient equations, inverse-function variable swaps, all five rearrangement stages, grid-based proofs, sampling proportion equations, tracing-paper rotation steps, reverse-bearing geometry, truncation examples, sine-rule labels, and the similar-shapes reference. The audit and its scope are in `METHODS-BOOKLET-REVIEW.md`.

## Version 1.0 — 21 October 2026

The complete working generator was preserved before starting changes for the next version.

- Archive: `versions/GCSE-Maths-Worksheet-Generator-v1.0.zip`
- File inventory and SHA-256 checksums: `versions/v1.0-manifest.json`
- Every archived file was verified against the current source.
- Extract the archive and open `GCSE Maths Worksheet Generator v1.0/index.html` to use version 1.0.

Keep the version 1.0 archive unchanged. Make future changes in the main workspace outside `versions/`.

The archive includes the application, question bank, reference booklet, manuals, review samples and validation reports. Papers saved in browser local storage are separate from these files and are not included.
